Understanding Cultural Diversity: More Than Just a Buzzword

Microsoft Reportedly Eliminates Its DEI Department Due To ‘Changing Business Needs’ But Claims Its ‘D&I Commitments Remain Unchanged’.

That was the heading of a Yahoo article that recently popped up on my phone. I rolled my eyes and clicked on the link. This came on the heels of a previous Forbes article highlighting SHRM’s announcement of a shift in their DEI focus (*clears throat*… sorry, I&D focus… rolls eyes again). SHRM, the self-proclaimed voice of the HR community, made its announcement on LinkedIn. Their CEO, Johnny Taylor, writes, “We're going to lead with inclusion, because we need a world where inclusion is front and center. And that means inclusion for all, not some people. Everyone has a right to feel that they belong in the workplace and that they are included.” All lives matter much! I think if I roll my eyes again, they’ll likely roll right out of my head, so I’ll save myself the trouble.

In the four years since the tragic death of George Floyd, companies have filled the air with public commitments of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Yet, many DEI initiatives are now being quietly shelved under the guise of "changing business needs," undermining the progress made. This trend is frustrating because embracing cultural diversity should drive meaningful change, not be reduced to a corporate buzzword. '

Cultural diversity, specifically, isn't just about ticking boxes or fulfilling quotas. It’s about recognizing, appreciating, and leveraging the vast range of human differences to foster innovation, empathy, and growth. It’s the acknowledgment that our varied backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences enrich our workplaces and communities.

Consider the metaphor of a quilt. Each patch, with its unique design and color, contributes to the beauty and functionality of the whole piece. Similarly, cultural diversity brings together different "patches"—individuals from various races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, and backgrounds—to create a vibrant, dynamic, and inclusive society.

With many organizations backpedaling on DEI initiatives, it’s crucial to find ways to champion cultural diversity in your career journey. Here’s how:

  1. Own Your Story: Your cultural background is a vital part of who you are. Embrace it and share it. Whether it’s through storytelling, presentations, or casual conversations, let your culture shine. Your unique experiences and perspectives are assets, not liabilities.

  2. Seek Inclusive Workplaces: Look for companies and environments that genuinely value diversity. During interviews, ask about their DEI initiatives and how they support diverse employees. Don't be afraid to walk away from places that don't align with your values.

  3. Build a Diverse Network: Surround yourself with people from different cultures and backgrounds. This diverse network can offer support, mentorship, and opportunities, enriching your professional journey.

  4. Advocate for DEI: Be a vocal advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in your workplace. Join or form employee resource groups, participate in DEI initiatives, and speak up when you see areas that need improvement. Change often starts from within.

  5. Continue Learning: Educate yourself about different cultures, including your own. Attend workshops, read books, and engage in conversations about diversity and inclusion. This ongoing learning will make you a more empathetic and effective professional.

  6. Mentor and Support Others: Help others navigate their career journeys by sharing your experiences and insights. Mentorship can be a powerful tool for promoting cultural diversity and helping others feel valued and included.

Cultural diversity is more than just a trend or a buzzword—it's a crucial element of a thriving, innovative, and resilient society. The journey towards true inclusivity is ongoing and requires commitment, effort, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. It’s often two steps forward, one step back, but every step counts.

As we navigate this road, let’s remember that diversity enriches our lives, broadens our perspectives, and strengthens our communities. Cultural diversity, in particular, brings together unique backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints that enhance our understanding of the world and foster empathy and innovation. By celebrating cultural diversity, we create vibrant, dynamic, and inclusive environments where everyone can thrive.

There will continue to be setbacks, especially in the ever-changing political climate, but don’t stress about it. Keep pushing forward, stay true to your values, and embrace cultural diversity in all its forms.

Remember, “wah fi yuh, cyaan un fi yuh.”
